Nilda Roman Perez was a prominent Cuban-American activist and political organizer who fought for the Cuban revolution. Born in Cuba in 1932, she moved to Miami in 1959. Hector Lavoe, one of Puerto Rico’s most famous singers, left behind a legacy that continues to live on. He had been married twice before, and both wives are still alive. However, it was his second marriage to Nilda Puchi Lavoé that produced him three kids — two sons and a daughter.

The legendary artist, who was born on May 17, 1947, died on June 28, 1993 because of complications related to HIV/AIDS. He was just 38 years old.

But what about Nilda Puchi Lavóe? She too passed away on July 21, 2002, but her death was different. Her husband Hector Lavoe did not die because of AIDS; he committed suicide. In fact, he tried to kill himself once before and failed.

He took a handful of pills, but he could not bring himself to swallow them. Instead, he drank some water and lay down on the bed. And that’s where he remained for four days, in agony. Finally, he woke up and called his mother, who rushed over immediately. When she arrived, he told her that he wanted to end his life.

His mother asked why he didn’t call anyone else, like his wife. But he replied that he needed no help. So she left him there.

On the fourth day, he became delirious and began hallucinating. He saw demons coming out of people’s mouths and heard voices calling his name. At one point, he thought that someone was trying to strangle him. Then he realized that it was actually his mother who was doing it.

When the police finally found him, he refused to go anywhere with them. They eventually convinced him to go with them by promising to take him home. But when they got to his house, he ran inside and locked the door.

Did They Share Any Children?

Hector Jr. was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and he died on October 8, 1970, according to the Social Security Administration Death Master File. His cause of death was listed as “gunshot wound.” However, there is speculation that he was actually murdered by his own friends.

The gossip site TMZ reported that Lavoe’s friend accidentally shot him while trying to kill himself. Another source claimed that the bullet went through his heart and hit Hector Jr. in the head. Still another rumor says that the shooting was premeditated.

According to the same report, Hector Jr.’s mother, Priscilla, never recovered from her loss. She committed suicide three months later.
