Gayniggers from Outer Space is a 1992 Danish English-language film written and directed by Morten Lindberg. The film follows a homosexual alien race of intergalactic snoopers on an intergalactic spree to search for their ”sinful” brothers. But when they come across Earth, they are mistaken for dangerous creatures from outer space and chaos ensues as people go crazy with fear. Gayniggers from Outer Space satirizes misconceptions about homosexuality, racism and prejudice by taking them to the extreme level – depicting aliens that look like “stereotypical black men” coming down to Earth in order to oppress humans and take over the planet.
The plot of the film follows an intriguing group of characters, namely a group of intergalactic homosexual black men from the planet Anus. These visitors soon discover the presence of female creatures on planet Earth and set out to eliminate them one by one with their rayguns. As each female character is eliminated, the previously oppressed male population gladly accepts this change in their lives. To leave behind something permanent, the visitors also leave a “Gay Ambassador” on Earth as part of a legacy project to educate and help people on this new way of life.
The Space Movie successfully delves into themes such as gender roles within society, power dynamics between different races and sexualities, and freedom from oppressive structures. It aims to demonstrate how certain figures can use inventive solutions to confront oppressors, even if they are coming from another universe. By tackling complex social issues, viewers may gain a better understanding of everyday situations in our world and be encouraged to think critically about equality for all.

The film has gained recognition for its ability to capture this “hyper-transgressive” atmosphere with its dazzling visuals and characters, which seems to be an effective combination for the audiences that have seen it.
Critics of the film have largely embraced it, praising it for daring cinematic techniques and its progressive attitude towards LGBTQ themes. Reviews have raved about its vibrant style, noting how it brings out a boldness lacking in a lot of current cinema releases. Many have commented on how it presents queer issues within a refreshingly subtle yet meaningful context. The film starts off in black-and-white and then slowly turns to color in a similar way to The Wizard of Oz. As the Space Movie progresses, there is a dramatic transition with its out of body visual effects that really gives it a modern reimagining of the classic children’s story.
Director Morten Lindberg referenced The Wizard of Oz when talking about the short film, saying that it was “a very powerful scene” and that he wanted viewers to have the same feeling as when Dorothy entered the world of Oz from her dull Kansas life. He hoped that audiences would instantly recognize his reference, though he updated some elements for a more contemporary feel. In a nod to this cultural reference, some characters in the short film wear cowboy hats just like Dorothy’s, and the colorful effects made after camera transitions allude to this iconic Space Movie.
